(Part 10: Modern Mudras)
Modern Mudras: Yoni Mudra ( The Gesture of The Sacred Feminine or Womb)
Yoni Mudra is a meditative hand gesture that invites introspection, grounding, and connection to inner stillness. In Sanskrit, the word yoni refers to the womb or source of creation. Within yogic philosophy, this symbolism reflects the idea of returning to a place of quiet origin and inner awareness.
This mudra is often practiced during meditation when the intention is to withdraw attention from external distractions and turn awareness inward. The shape created by the hands forms a symbolic container, representing a space of reflection, calm, and deep presence.
Yoni Mudra encourages practitioners to pause and reconnect with the natural rhythm of breath and awareness. Through this gentle gesture, the body and mind are invited into a state of steady focus and quiet observation.

Sanskrit & Symbolism
The Sanskrit word yoni translates to womb, origin, or sacred source. In many spiritual traditions, this symbol represents creation, nurturing energy, and the beginning of life.
Within yogic philosophy, the womb is viewed as a place of protection and transformation. Yoni Mudra reflects this symbolism by creating a triangular shape with the hands, which is often associated with the feminine principle and creative energy.
This gesture is sometimes used in meditation practices that encourage pratyahara, the yogic concept of withdrawing awareness from external stimuli and turning attention inward.
By forming the hands in this symbolic shape, practitioners create a visual and energetic reminder of returning to inner stillness.
Yoni Mudra becomes a quiet invitation to reconnect with the source of awareness that exists within.
How to Practice Yoni Mudra
Sit comfortably with the spine upright and relaxed.
Bring the tips of the thumbs together.
Bring the tips of the index fingers together to form a triangle shape.
Allow the remaining fingers to interlace comfortably.
Rest the hands in front of the lower abdomen or in the lap.
Relax the shoulders and allow the breath to move naturally.
Remain here for several minutes, observing the rhythm of the breath and the stillness of the body.
Many practitioners enjoy exploring Yoni Mudra during meditation or quiet reflection practices.
Energetic & Anatomical Associations
Yoni Mudra is often associated with grounding energy and cultivating a sense of inner stability.
The triangular shape created by the hands reflects the symbolic connection to creative energy and the natural cycles of growth and renewal.
During meditation, this gesture encourages awareness to settle into the lower abdomen, an area often linked with stability, intuition, and centered awareness.
When practiced with slow breathing, many practitioners experience a sense of quiet focus and inward attention.
Energetically, Yoni Mudra supports practices that emphasize introspection and subtle awareness.

The Takeaway
Mudras remind us that subtle practices can create meaningful shifts in awareness. Through the positioning of the hands, we invite the body and mind into a state of presence, balance, and energetic harmony.
Practices like this can be explored during meditation, pranayama, or quiet moments throughout the day. With consistency, these small gestures become powerful tools for cultivating awareness and intention.
In the Modern Mudras series, each gesture offers a different pathway into the energetic language of yoga.
