Modern Mudras: Bhairava Mudra (The Gesture of Inner Balance, The Divine Union of Shiva & Shakti)

Bhairava Mudra is a meditative hand gesture that symbolizes balance, unity, and the integration of complementary energies. This mudra is often practiced during seated meditation, where the hands rest gently in the lap and the body settles into stillness.

In yogic symbolism, Bhairava Mudra reflects harmony between different aspects of our experience. The placement of one hand resting softly over the other represents a state of equilibrium and quiet awareness.

When the body becomes still and the breath moves naturally, this mudra can support a sense of calm presence. The simple positioning of the hands creates a stable foundation for meditation, allowing attention to rest in the moment.

Bhairava Mudra offers a gentle reminder that balance is cultivated through awareness and steady practice.

Sanskrit & Symbolism

The word Bhairava comes from Sanskrit and refers to a powerful aspect of the deity Bhairava, a form associated with Shiva in Hindu philosophy and spiritual traditions.

Within yogic symbolism, Bhairava represents awareness that is expansive, steady, and deeply present. The gesture of Bhairava Mudra reflects this idea through the resting of the hands in a calm and balanced position.

Traditionally, the right hand rests gently over the left palm while both hands relax in the lap. This placement symbolizes the integration of complementary energies and the harmony that arises through meditation.

A related variation known as Bhairavi Mudra places the left hand over the right. Both versions reflect balance and unity within the body and mind.

The simplicity of this mudra allows practitioners to focus on breath, awareness, and the quiet space of meditation.

How to Practice Bhairava Mudra

  1. Sit comfortably with the spine upright and relaxed.

  2. Place the left hand in the lap with the palm facing upward.

  3. Rest the right hand gently on top of the left palm.

  4. Allow the thumbs to relax naturally.

  5. Rest the hands comfortably against the lower abdomen.

  6. Soften the shoulders and allow the breath to move naturally.

Remain here for several minutes, allowing the body and mind to settle into stillness.

This mudra is commonly practiced during meditation or quiet reflection.

Energetic & Anatomical Associations

Bhairava Mudra supports meditation by creating a sense of symmetry and steadiness within the body.

The placement of the hands encourages the shoulders to relax and the chest to remain open, supporting natural breathing.

Energetically, the gesture symbolizes the harmonious circulation of prana throughout the body. Many practitioners experience a sense of grounded awareness while practicing this mudra.

The stillness of the hands also encourages the mind to settle. When the body remains steady, the breath becomes smooth and the nervous system often shifts toward a relaxed and balanced state.

Chakra Connection

Crown Chakra (Sahasrara)

Because Bhairava Mudra is commonly practiced during meditation, many traditions associate it with the crown chakra and the experience of expanded awareness.
