5 Tips For Creating A Peaceful Meditation Space At Home

Creating a peaceful space in your home to chill out and connect to yourself is a beautiful practice in self-care! A quiet corner in your home, a small room, maybe a little outdoor zen space, or if you are strapped for real estate perhaps it’s just a comfortable cushion and a do not disturb sign.  Click here for my free guide: Create Your Sacred Space, and I'll send you 10 vibey tips for your home meditation and yoga space.

Wherever your space is, here are 5 tips to make it a tranquil retreat for self discovery.

1. Declutter, declutter, DECLUTTER.

2. Bring the outdoors in.

3. Experiment with aromatherapy

4. Embrace natural light.

5. Grab some props.

GETTING STARTED:

1. Declutter, declutter, DECLUTTER

Clearing out the physical clutter (and sound clutter) will prepare you to clear out that mental clutter too. A tidy space helps clear your mind. This means when you sit down to practice, nothing around you will attract your attention (Oh geeze is that dust? Ugh I haven‘t finished that book yet. Did the dryer just turn off?) I like to also put a sign on the door- it says “Meditating-please do not disturb“ The trick to decluttering is to remove everything that could potentially derail your meditation. By clearing out possible distractions you will be able to focus, and you will cherish the perks of meditation! Now go! Declutter away!!

2. Bring the outdoors in

Plants help create a beautiful, natural ambiance and allow you to be more in touch with nature. I love having plants around me. Especially because they help to oxygenate the air. And sometimes I will use a plant as a point of focus if I don't feel like closing my eyes during my meditation time. You can just literally sit with nature and contemplate just how magnificent life (all life) on Earth is!

3. Experiment with aromatherapy

Try natural incense, diffusing essential oils, natural room sprays or naturally scented soy candles. The olfactory sense is a fantastic way to connect with calm. Think about places you find calming, what scents do you remember? Maybe its the smell of vacation: for me, coco butter. Or the essential oil blend from a yoga studio that you love. Remember it‘s your practice, bring in your own brand of peace.

4. Embrace natural light

A sunny room will boost your mood and even increase your positive energy. I also love to light a candle or a few candles to create a soft warm glow. Pink salt lamps are also quite wonderful to illuminate your space and bring in some positive ions. Do a little experimentation and see what serves your practice best. (Ps the flame of a candle is also an excellent focal point if you prefer to keep your eyes open during your meditation.)

5. Grab some props

Transform your practice with nice quality props, from cushions and bolsters to blankets and blocks. Try different props according to what is most comfortable for your body each time you meditate. You might even switch the asana you sit in during your practice depending on time of day, how your physical body feels or even how your mental body feels, let the props do their job and support your practice. Also consider your headphones or speakers as a props too.

So you see, setting up a meditation space is super easy. You can‘t mess it up. Why? Because it‘s your space, for your practice. Don‘t like something, chuck it and give your space some grace.

*BONUS TIP* SCHEDULE YOUR PRACTICE

This is probably the most crucial thing to remember: this is your practice, & practice is key. Set aside 5-10 minutes of your day for your practice, commit to it and schedule it. Of course feel free to extend the length of your practice as you become accustomed to meditating.

Bringing a feeling of calm and peace to each day of your life is entirely up to you! You can do it!! Don't forget to click here for my free guide: Create Your Sacred Space, and I'll send you more vibey tips for your home meditation and yoga space.
