Meditating in the Summer: Sweat, Stillness & Serenity

Summer's vibrant energy can be exhilarating and exciting, but it can also be overwhelming. Summer hits differently. The days stretch out like sun-kissed invitations, the air hums with energy, and everything seems louder, brighter, busier. And honestly, that beautiful buzz can sometimes feel a little extra. (Kinda like your hair after a week of salty swims and SPF overload.)

Enter: summer meditation.

Not the stuffy, candlelit version locked indoors. I’m talking fresh air, bare feet, breezy clothes, and the kind of grounded presence that helps you soak in summer without getting swept away by it.

Why summer is actually a great time to meditate

Sure, the heat can feel like an excuse to skip everything and head straight for iced coffee and air conditioning. But hear me out. The sensory overload of summer makes it the perfect time to tune inward. When the world outside is buzzing, your inner calm becomes a sanctuary.

Plus, sunlight naturally lifts your mood, and being outside helps regulate your circadian rhythm. Meditating outdoors for just 10–20 minutes can boost serotonin, help you sleep better, and reconnect you with your body and the rhythms of nature. Not to mention, it’s a refreshing way to unplug without missing out.

Hot Tips for Cool Summer Meditation

1. Choose Your Time Wisely

Early morning or golden hour (that sweet time just before sunset) is your best bet. The temps are gentler, the light is gorgeous, and your nervous system will thank you.

2. Location, Location, Location

Find your favorite patch of grass, a shady tree, your porch, or even a balcony. Just aim for a spot with a little breeze and less foot traffic. Meditation on concrete under full sun? Nope. We’re aiming for chill, not “griddle my thighs.” Check out a local park (you can always find good shade in a park). Maybe you have a beach nearby, ooooo the rhythmic sound of the waves promotes relaxation. Anywhere you can find a little solitude (and shade).

3. Protect Your Skin

Sun protection is non-negotiable. Think mineral sunscreen, breathable long sleeves, wide-brim hats, or just stick to the shade. Bonus: a light scarf can double as a sun shield or mini altar cloth.

4. Sit Smart

Use a meditation cushion, yoga mat, beach towel, or even a picnic blanket. If you’re on sand, it’s extra grounding — just expect some extra exfoliation. (Mother Nature’s spa treatment, right?) AND STAY HYDRATED! Your skin and body will need it! Keep that water nearby!

5. Embrace the Sounds

Instead of fighting every barking dog or beachgoer playlist, use it. Let the sounds become part of your meditation: rising, falling, passing. Nature won’t be silent, but she will be honest. And that’s exactly what you need.

Try this summer meditation sequence

  • Get Grounded: Sit comfortably and feel your connection to the earth. Take a few deep belly breaths: in through the nose, out through the mouth.
  • Body Scan: Gently move awareness from the crown of your head to your toes, releasing tension and softening into the moment.
  • Nature Focus: Pick one element to focus on (the warmth of the sun, the rustling of the wind, the scent of grass). Let it anchor you.
  • Breath Work: Keep it simple. Inhale for 4, exhale for 6. Let the exhale melt your mind and body. This helps cool the nervous system, literally and figuratively.
  • Close with Gratitude: Give a little nod to the moment. The heat, the breeze, the beauty of being alive in this season.

Benefits of Summer Meditation

  • Regulates your energy during long days.
  • Reduces anxiety when schedules get chaotic.
  • Enhances mindfulness so you actually enjoy the summer instead of racing through it.
  • Supports your yoga practice by giving your mind the same love you give your body.

Keep It Real

Some days you’ll be sweating before you finish your first breath. Other days it’ll feel like you’re floating in stillness. It’s all part of the practice. You’re not doing it wrong, you’re doing it honestly, which is the whole point.

Grab your hat, find your shady spot, and give yourself permission to just be. Your nervous system and your summer self will be so grateful! Oh and here's a little freebie for you! Click here for my Practice Outside Guide.
