Modern Mudras: Part 3 Apana Mudra (The Gesture of Elimination and Release)
Dana Lloyd | FEB 1

(Month 3: Modern Mudras)
Okay can we all agree that we all hold on to way too much. Thoughts, stress, tension, and energy that isn’t even ours. Apana Mudra is the graceful way of saying, “No thanks, I’m done carrying this.”
It’s known as the gesture of elimination and release. But before giggles start, think of it as helping the body, mind, and energy system release and purify. It supports grounding, digestion, and emotional cleansing. Basically, your energetic detox button.

“Apana” is one of the five Vayus, or pranic currents. It's the downward-moving energy responsible for elimination and release. The thumb (fire), middle finger (space), and ring finger (earth) join in this mudra, harmonizing transformation with grounding and expansion.
This mudra helps you process not just what you eat, but what you absorb emotionally, mentally, and energetically.
Sit or stand tall, spine elongated (no hunchback of Notre Dame please)
Bring the tip of your thumb to touch the tips of your middle and ring fingers. Keep the index and pinky fingers extended.
Rest hands on your thighs, palms facing up or down.
Close your eyes and take slow, steady breaths. Exhaling anything you no longer need.
You can hold this mudra during meditation, gentle yoga, or even at your desk between calls (because yes, even meetings require energetic cleansing).
Apana Mudra activates the downward flow of Apana Vayu, the energy of grounding, elimination, and release. It connects the fire, space, and earth elements, helping to stabilize emotions, stimulate digestion, and clear energetic blockages. Think of it as pressing the “refresh” button on your internal systems.
• Chakra: Root (Muladhara) & Sacral (Svadhisthana)
• Element: Earth, Fire, Space
• Balance: Grounding yet liberating; connects release and renewal
• Supports physical detoxification and digestion
• Calms the nervous system
• Promotes emotional release and inner stability
• Grounds scattered or anxious energy
Apana Mudra pairs beautifully with grounding or cooling practices.
Cue gently:
“Bring your thumb, middle, and ring fingers together. With each breath out, release what no longer serves you: physically, mentally, emotionally.”
Encourage students to visualize energy moving down through the legs into the earth.
• Gentle & Yin Yoga: During forward folds or reclined twists to promote release.
• Meditation: Use for grounding after emotional or energetic practices.
• Pranayama: Combine with long exhalations or Sitali breath for cooling effect.
I let go of what no longer serves me.
I release to renew.
What am I ready to release: physically, mentally, or emotionally?
How does letting go create more space for what I truly need?
We’ll shift from release to renewal: calling in energy, vitality, and life force with Prana Mudra.
