Pranayama & Picnics: How Breathwork Makes Your Summer More Chill
Dana Lloyd | JUN 16, 2025

Let’s set the scene: it’s sunny, you’re sprawled out on a blanket under a tree, snacks within reach, and your to-do list is somewhere off in the distance… fading with each breath. That’s not just summer magic, it’s pranayama season, baby.
When life gets hot & hectic, your breath is the built-in air conditioning system for your nervous system. It’s free, it’s portable, and you don’t even have to roll out a mat. Your summer calendar might be packed with park hangs, beach days, and backyard BBQs, but everyone can weave in a little breathwork here and there. And it might just be your secret weapon for staying cool, mentally and physically.
In yogic philosophy, prana is your life force energy. Ayama means to extend or regulate. So pranayama is the practice of consciously controlling your breath to shift your energy, your mood, your focus, or your inner thermostat.
It’s not about breathing “perfectly.” It’s about getting curious, becoming aware, and using breath as a tool instead of an afterthought.
Why Summer Breathwork Hits Different
Hot weather tends to stir up pitta energy: the fiery, driven, sometimes impatient side of you. That heat can be great for productivity and motivation, but too much of it can tip into irritability, exhaustion, or burnout. You know that feeling when you’re sweating just standing still and someone cuts in line and suddenly you’re ready to snap? Yeah. That. Haha I live in Miami Beach so this is kind of life here since it's nearly always warm here. Ooof!
Pranayama helps balance that fire with cool, calming, nourishing breaths that feel like an inner hammock swing. It’s also perfect for outdoor settings. No heavy props or complicated sequences are necessary, just your breath, the breeze, and a little intention.
1. Sitali (Cooling Breath)
This is your internal popsicle. Stick out your tongue and curl the sides (or purse your lips like a straw if you can’t curl it), then inhale through the rolled tongue or lips, and exhale through the nose.
Do this for 2–3 minutes when the heat is messing with your mood.
2. Nadi Shodhana (Alternate Nostril Breathing)
Balances both sides of your brain and cools mental heat. Inhale through the left nostril, exhale through the right. Then reverse. Keep the rhythm smooth and steady. Great for transitions like from a beach nap to an actual social interaction.
3. 4-7-8 Breath
Inhale for 4, hold for 7, exhale for 8. This one’s like flipping your nervous system’s “do not disturb” switch. Use it when summer stress sneaks up (like when your sunscreen explodes in your bag). This is a great bio-hacking technique to activate the parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest or the relaxation response).
4. Box Breathing
Inhale on a count to 4. Hold the breath in for a count of 4. Exhale on a 4 count. And hold the breath out for a count of 4. This technique is so grounding and centering and also helps with better focus. It's great for pre-picnic traffic or when your flight is delayed on the way to a fabulous vacation (I literally used this technique on a hot plane during a 2 hour delay, with wild toddlers in my row, on my last trip!)
How to Bring Breathwork Into Summer Moments
• At the park: Sneak in a few rounds of Sitali under a shady tree before lunch.
• On your beach towel: Alternate nostril breathing while listening to the waves = instant nervous system reset.
• During a BBQ: Step aside for a few 4-7-8 breaths instead of reaching for your third glass of rosé.
• Before yoga in the sun: Use cooling breath as a warm-up to prevent overheating before you even hit Warrior II.
Breathwork + Summer = Yes Please
• Less reactivity. You won’t melt down over melted ice cream (or flight delays).
• More presence. You actually enjoy your friends, food, and sunsets.
• Balanced energy. No more burnout by noon.
• Clarity + calm. Because life’s too short to waste summer feeling frazzled.
Alright, pack your breath alongside your snacks. Pranayama isn’t just a practice, it’s a lifestyle, and it’s wildly underrated when it comes to surviving (and thriving in) the heat.
Now, go forth breathe deeply, snack thoughtfully, and remember: your nervous system deserves a summer vacation too.
