What to Expect from Your First Yoga Nidra Session

Yoga Nidra is not just taking a nap, although your body will be so grateful to you for the session!
If you’re feeling run-down, frazzled, or like your brain has 37 tabs open at all times, welcome. You’re in the right place. Yoga Nidra is your permission slip to unplug, reset, and reclaim your energy! No Sun Salutations AT ALL!
Yoga Nidra, often called “yogic sleep,” is a guided meditation technique that drops you into a state between waking and sleeping. Unlike traditional seated meditation, you lie down (yes, really), get cozy, and allow yourself to be led into deep relaxation and awareness. It’s like a power nap with spiritual upgrades.
A Bit of History: Where It All Began
This practice goes way back. Yoga Nidra was formalized by Swami Satyananda Saraswati in the mid-20th century, drawing from ancient Tantric practices. His 9-step method made it accessible for modern practitioners by turning deep yogic wisdom into a practical tool for rest, healing, and transformation.

Here’s what typically happens during a full Yoga Nidra practice:
Here’s why Yoga Nidra is having a well-earned moment in the wellness world, especially among high-achieving women and people navigating hormonal shifts:
For your first session, try it in the evening or late afternoon. You’ll already be winding down, and it can even help you sleep more soundly. Aim for a 20–30 minute practice, and don’t overthink it. Just show up, lie down, and listen.
Your first Yoga Nidra session might surprise you. You may drift, you may sleep, you may feel energy move, you might just feel super rested. All of it is welcome. The key is consistency, compassion, and a willingness to rest (radical, I know).
